5 Tips to Make Spooning Sex Even Hotter

The spooning sex position is perfect for lazy mornings. Especially when you want to put those precious few minutes before you have to get up to good use. But this sex position isn’t only for when you’re too tired to bother with any other. (Reverse cowgirl? Before coffee?)

“Spooning sex positions are sometimes thought of as lazy or tired positions, but they can actually be great for intimacy,” says Rachel E. Simon, LCSW MEd, a psychotherapist who specializes in sexuality and gender. Non-official opinion here: They also work if you’re feeling lazy.

Spooning lets you go from side-by-side snuggling to sex in record time. Just because it’s low effort doesn’t mean it needs to be low reward. The angle of most spooning sex positions allow easy access to the G-spot. And, it’s easier achieve than more acrobatic positions like the wheelbarrow, so you can go all night (or day). Just tell your boss something, er, came up if they ask why you couldn’t make your morning Zoom call.

“These positions involve less weight-bearing and less effort to hold the position for a long period of time,” says Simon. Since spooning often leads to forking, here’s 5 tips and spooning sex position variations to make it even hotter.

5 Great Spooning Sex Tips

1. Use Your Hands

Sex isn’t soccer — unless it’s your particular kink, no one will throw a red card for giving yourself a hand to orgasm. You can even yell “Gooooooooooooal!” at climax! And, from the spooning position, both the big spoon and the little spoon can use their hands more freely. Spooning sex positions “allow for access to the little spoon partner’s erogenous zones, like their neck, nipples, clitoris, and back.” says Simon.

The alternative is your hands awkwardly lie there. We guess you could take up knitting, but “erogenous zone stimulation” seems more productive.

2. Get Leverage

If you’re the little spoon, angle your body so you’re close to a firm surface, like a wall or the headboard. As your partner pushes forward, press your arms and feet against the surface to increase — or decrease — the speed and intensity.

3. Use Toys

One great thing about this sex position is that whether you’re the big spoon or little spoon, both of you have your hands free during sex. Keep gadgets and gizmos a plenty within reach and switch them out for a variety of stimulation. Isn’t that neat?

4. Use Lube

This is good advice for every sex position, but the spooning sex position can make it hard for the big spoon to penetrate. Use plenty of lube to make it easier to get everything into place. “Folks with smaller penises might not find spooning sex positions as satisfying as it can be difficult to stay inside,” says Simon. “Regardless of size, this is a position that might need some shifting to figure out, but can be very rewarding if you stick with it!” Like college!

5. Try Something New

If you want to start experimenting with anal sex or a new strap-on for the first time, this is a good position to ease into it. It allows for easy access for rear entry sex but it’s still super intimate and easy to communicate and monitor for discomfort. “Anyone interested in trying anal penetration could benefit from these positions for a more gentle start, as spooning lets the receptive partner have a bit more control,” says Simon.

6 Spooning Sex Positions to Try

1. Spooning Doggy Style

This position couples the deep penetration of doggy style sex with the intimacy of spooning.  Get into it by starting in a spooning position. 

Or, try our preferred method: Begin in doggy style, get too tired, and flop over to the side. In this position, the little spoon leans forward and curls their legs up, placing their feet between the big spoon’s legs. The big spoon can hold the little spoon’s hips for leverage for deeper penetration.

2. Little Spoon Leg Lift

As the little spoon, spreading out your body gives your partner better access to the front of your body to get handsy. In a good way. Throw your top leg back over the big spoon or hold it up in the air. If you adjust your leg, that will change the angle of penetration so you can get more G-Spot or P-spot stimulation during sex.

3. Big Spoon Leg Wrap

With your partner’s leg wrapped around you, you’ll feel like they can’t get enough of you. Which is true. Your morning breath on the other hand…. Oh and the big spoon will have better leverage to give intense thrusts.

In the leg wrap spooning position, the little spoon lies on their side with their arms up over their head. The big spoon wraps their leg up over the little spoon’s hips and places a hand on the little spoon’s thigh to hold them closer. Picture them attempting to give you a piggyback ride, and then you both just toppled over and started having sex. Sorry for ruining the image of those for you forever.

4. Spooning on the Couch

If you have both legs up means your partner can penetrate you more deeply but you still get to be super close. To get into this position, lie close to the edge of the couch and face away from your partner. Place one foot on the ground and have one leg bent up in the air. You can also wrap your upper leg back around the big spoon or place it on the back of the couch, depending on how wide your couch is. Your futon should do just fine.

5. Little Spoon on Top

You’ll get more control over the rhythm and intensity. To begin, sit on top of the big spoon, facing their feet. Once you’re in a comfortable position, let your partner penetrate you and slowly lie back until you’re lying flat on top of your partner. You can get into this position by flipping over from the side-by-side spooning position but we’re also not paying your ER bill if you try that.
