Black and White Oreo Cookies

Do you love Oreos? Do you love New York? Then you’ll probably love Oreo’s new limited-edition Black & White Cookie Oreos. Nabisco’s delightful take on the classic black and white cookie from the Big Apple is what cookie snobs are calling “a very big deal.”

According to Instagram food insider Markie Devo, Oreo’s newest cookie flavor will be released alongside two other permanent cookie flavors starting the first week of January 2024.

So if you want to relive that time you spent in New York City getting yelled at and flipped off while eating black-and-white cookies on the subway, then grab a bag at your local retailer and enjoy.

What Are Black & White Cookie Oreos?

The new Black & White Cookie Oreos arrive in January and will feature two Golden Oreo cookies with vanilla and chocolate-flavored creme. The combination of vanilla and chocolate icing with a flaky cookie is their recreation of NYC’s half moon cookie.

According to Nabisco, the other soon to be released permanent flavors are Peanut Butter Cakesters and Gluten-Free Golden Oreo, a new gluten-free take on its fan-favorite Golden cookies.

Starting the first week of January or shortly after, you can find all of these limited-edition cookies nationwide at stores where Oreos are sold. You can also buy them online which is perfect if you don’t want to leave your couch after the holidays.

What Are Black & White Cookies?

Like $1 hot-dogs and expensive rent for a tiny closet, black & white cookies are a New York City staple. For over 100 years, New York pastry shops have dipped flaky butter cookies or crumbly cake into vanilla and chocolate fondant icing and sold them to hungry New Yorkers. And tourists.

You can find them in almost any bodega, pastry shop, bagel shop, or supermarket in the city. They come in all sizes but traditionally have the two colors of icing and a soft, cake-like cookie core, all of which is quite different from an Oreo cookie. But, it’s the thought that counts, right?

These popular cookies likely originated in Manhattan at Glaser’s Bake Shop. Other Internet tales lead us to Hemstrought’s Bakery in Utica in Upstate New York which makes ‘Half Moon’ cookies that closely resemble the beloved black and white cookies from the city.

Regardless of who created them first, they’ve become as close to a symbol of New York City as the Empire State Building. In 1994, ‘The Dinner Party’ episode of Seinfeld featured the cookies and made them even more well-known outside of New York.

Every Oreo fan has their favorite way to eat an Oreo cookie, but for the new limited edition Black & White cookies, it’s best to follow Jerry Seinfeld’s advice and enjoy both flavors at the same time.

Will New Yorkers appreciate Oreo’s take on their timeless treat? Probably not. But, we’ll have to wait until January to find out for sure.
